Take control of your existing My Health Record

To take control of your My Health Record, you will need to prove your identity. My Health Record uses details from Medicare to verify your identity. You may need to know information such as:

  • your Medicare card number
  • the BSB and bank account number that your Medicare benefits are paid into (if this has been arranged with Medicare)
  • your address as recorded with Medicare
  • information about your last doctor's visit.

If you can’t answer the identity questions or would prefer to speak to someone in person, you can call the My Health Record help line on 1800 723 471.

You can find step-by-step instructions on how to take control of your record, once you have proven your identity.

When you take control, the information and documents that were in the record when it was managed by your authorised representative will still be in the record. Healthcare providers may have also uploaded clinical documents and viewed information in your record.

If you don’t take control of your record, it will continue to exist. Healthcare providers will still be able to view information in the record and upload clinical documents to it.
