Active Ingredient Prescribing

Published 23 February 2021

The Department of Health has been working with industry over the past 2 years to develop the implementation strategy for AIP.

As of 1 February 2021, all PBS and RPBS prescriptions (noting a small number of exclusions) are required to include the active ingredient name(s) of medicines.

The Department and NPS MedicineWise have developed a range of communication and educational materials to support prescriber, pharmacist and consumer understanding concerning the impending changes for AIP. These materials include fact sheets, targeted FAQs, and Pharmacist and Prescriber ‘Leave Behinds’ which are now available on the PBS and NPS MedicineWise websites.

The AIP Clinical support materials developed by the Department of Health and Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission), in consultation with industry, are also now available. The AIP user guide, fact sheet, list of medicines for brand consideration and list of excluded medicinal items are now available on the Commission’s website.

Further enquiries on the implementation of AIP should be directed to [email protected].

The Agency has also incorporated a link to the same PBS information on the Agency Electronic Prescribing Healthcare Providers page.
