Agency webinars introduce SNOMED CT-AU and the Australian Medicines Terminology to healthcare providers and digital health developers.
It is widely recognised that interoperability is key to the success of implementing a national digital health system. What is less well understood, however, is that interoperability is not just one thing. The Agency is running a series of introductory webinars in March.
In this issue of #Share, Dr Nathan Pinskier distinguishes interconnectivity between vendor networks from semantic interoperability of the content of messages. The former is about enabling messages to pass seamlessly from one system to another, the latter is about ensuring the consistency of meaning of those messages.
Semantic interoperability is thus foundational to clinical safety, and enables more advanced applications such as clinical decision support and detailed public health and epidemiological studies.
Clinical terminologies, as the name suggests, are formal terminologies used to accurately describe clinical events, diagnoses, medicines, and more. The rigorous and systematic nature of these terminologies preserves meaning in disparate clinical systems, and thus enables semantic interoperability.
SNOMED CT-AU has been endorsed by all Australian State and Territory governments as the preferred national clinical terminology for use in Australia. It provides local variations and customisation of terms from SNOMED CT, the most comprehensive clinical terminology in the world. A key element of SNOMED CT-AU is the Australian Medicines Terminology (AMT), which accurately describes the medicines used in the Australian market.
