Australian Medicines Terminology (AMT) v3 Beta release available for license holder feedback and evaluation

Published 3 February 2013

NEHTA has published the Australian Medicines Terminology (AMT) v3 Beta release for licence holders.

The AMT v3 model has been designed to simplify the AMT v2 model to make it easier to understand, implement and to align with the IHTSDO SNOMED CT Release Format 2 specifications.

The Australian Medicines Terminology delivers unique identification of originator and generic brands of medicines and their ingredients. It also includes standard naming conventions to accurately describe medications. AMT is designed for implementation in clinical information systems to support the electronic medication management process.

Following the release of the AMT Implementation Plan developed with industry to increase use of AMT in clinical systems, NEHTA released a number of technical resources including the Mapping Guidelines, AMT v2 to v3 Migration Guide, and Editorial Rules (v3 model). Additional resources have been developed and published on the National Clinical Terminology and Information Service (NCTIS) website https://nehta.gov.au/ to accompany the AMT v3 Beta release including:

  • AMT v3 Overview and Detailed Business Use Cases
  • AMT v3 Technical Implementation Guide (due for publication mid-February 2013)
  • AMT Release Note (v3 model)
  • AMT Reference Set Development Approach (v3 model)

With this release current and prospective AMT users now have the opportunity to:

  • Preview the AMT v3 Beta release files.
  • Evaluate and test the data against their clinical use cases.
  • Determine the impact (if any) to current mappings, algorithms and systems required to extract and implement AMT v3 data.
  • Provide feedback to the NCTIS on any bugs or implementation barriers with the AMT v3 model structure and release format.

Note: This release is not for use in a live clinical setting.

NEHTA encourages all current and prospective AMT users to complete an online survey to help us gauge the suitability of the AMT v3 Beta product. This survey will be made available by mid-February.  We are also planning some workshops and web conferences to gather user feedback, and provide implementation support and training.

The release is open for feedback until 5pm (AESTD) 30 April 2013.

AMT is available for eHealth software developers to use in their Australian products. Licensing arrangements are administered by NEHTA. Access to release files is available to those holding these current licence agreements:

  • SNOMED CT Affiliate Licence Agreement for access to the SNOMED CT International Release; and
  • Australian National Terminology Release Licence Agreement to provide access to extensions and derivatives supplied by NEHTA.

Questions, feedback, requests for further product support, participation in workshops and web conferences and/or to apply for a free licence can be directed to [email protected] This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
